Music by Barrington Pheloung (1987)
MIDI by G. Pollen (2007)

Way back in the 80's I watched the Inspector Morse TV episodes on PBS. I really enjoyed them. But, I especially was drawn to the theme music that played at the end during the credits. The problem was that PBS always interrupted this beautiful music for announcements for other programming. So, I never got to hear the whole thing back then. . . frustrating!

But this last week I came upon the TV series "Endeavor" on NETFLIX. It is a 4-part series about the young Morse as he was getting started in police work. This time around, the same final theme did at least play through all of the final credits without interruption.

It turns out that even that is not the whole piece as written by Barrington Pheloung. Happily I found a wonderful MIDI file by G. Pollen that does contain the whole piece. I have been able to register that file for the Hauptwerk Hereford Cathedral organ. I love it! :-)

From Wikipedia:
----------------------------------------------------------
Inspector Morse is a British detective drama television series based on a series of novels by Colin Dexter. It starred John Thaw as Chief Inspector Morse and Kevin Whately as Sergeant Lewis. The series comprises 33 two-hour episodes (100 minutes excluding commercials) — 20 more episodes than there are novels -- produced between 1987 and 2000. Dexter made unaccredited cameo appearances in all but three of the episodes.

The theme and incidental music for the series was written by Barrington Pheloung and utilizes a motif based on the Morse code for "M.O.R.S.E.". In the documentary, The Mystery of Morse, Pheloung states that he occasionally spelled out the name of the killer in Morse code in the music, or alternatively spelled out the name of another character as a red herring. The series also included opera and other classical genres as part of its soundtrack, most notably pieces by Richard Wagner and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (whose Magic Flute is a significant plot device in one episode).
