NOTE: Lotte WERKMEISTER (b.1885 in Berlin-Neukölln; † 1970 in Bergholz, today Nuthetal) was a German chansonniere, comedienne and actress. Her first stage experience was in a student choir in Magdeburg. In 1916 she had an individual stage success in Leo Ascher’s Operetta “Der Soldat der Marie” where she sung couplets and operetta “schalgers”, in 2000 performances! In 1917 she also started a film career in minor roles in the silent movies in Berlin, followed by the numerous offers to perform in the Berlin’s revue theaters and vadeuvilles. Ever since 1920, she was one of important names in Berlin’s world of the “little stages”, creating the temperamental comedy character of the typical “Berlin snout". Until the end of the Weimar Republic she was popular and loved by the Berliners, although amount of films she was featured in and recordings she waxed, is modest. During the Nazi years, Lotte Werkmeister withdrew from the Berliner life and moved out to Bergholz, where she stayed – contunuously acting and becoming a local celebrity - until her death. Lotte Werkmeister is a honorary citizen of the community Bergholz and is buried there.
This song entitled “Vim-Schlager” (meaning: The VIM – Hit, and advertising the VIM cleaning powder) was a commercial song written by Willy Rosen, a celebrated cabaret composer and lyricist, who during the Weimar Republic was an influential artist in the Berlin cabaret world. The song was advertised by the line: Auf dieser Platte singt Putzfrau Vim ["On this records sings the Charwoman Vim"]. The text is a kind of a comedy monologue praising the importance of everyday cleaning, scrubbing, scraping, rinsing, washing, etc. and ofcourse, how important is to use the VIM powder to all these praiseworthy actions. There’s no need to add, what rarity is this recording. Possibly, after this sample recording had been waxed, the actual record never followed - for no trace of such record has been left in the web archives.
