Actor, dancer, singer, choreographer—and (very) occasional rap artist!—Matthew Foo is a modern-day Renaissance Man. Though it's hard to imagine how the multi-talented artist ekes out enough time for all his interests (did we mention he's also a graphic artist?), recording has always been something the Singapore-based crooner has felt compelled to do.

Matthew's debut effort, 2003's By Love We Love, was recorded a year-and-a-half after the singer was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. His vocal range diminished by throat surgery, Matthew was told by doctors he may never sing professionally again. But just over a year later, Matthew—who's a devoted Christian—was back to form, and with a new-found appreciation for his gift. "God gave me my voice back so I could sing for him," he asserts. Overwhelmed by feelings of gratitude, Matthew found an outlet for his emotions in the recording studio. By Love We Love—a collection of upbeat songs about love, faith, hope and grace—was the result.

For his follow-up project, the single "You Will Be," Matthew went in an entirely different direction, reaching out to Grammy-nominated songwriter Sarah Hart (Amy Grant's "Better than a Hallelujah") and producer Sal Oliveri (Coldplay, David Cook) for help. Though "You Will Be" was originally written in pop/rock format, Matthew convinced producer Oliveri that the smooth and easy-on-the-ears stylings of KPop would be a better fit for his vocals. The end sound is as much Nashville-produced CCM as it is KPop ballad.

"You Will Be" not only transcends genres, but touches on a subject familiar to most of us—how we all fall short of expectations—a topic that resonated with the singer during discussions with songwriter Sarah Hart. "No matter what kind of relationship you're in," says Matthew, "As a human, you're going to fail the ones you love—sometimes badly." But the song gives hope to those yearning to be the kind of person they were created to be. "Encouragement, redemption and hope: if that's what people take from the song, I'd be happy" he says, adding that he feels his vocal range has improved since his last album. "It's why I threw myself into this song with abandon." And, clearly, hope is something this talented artist knows a thing or two about.

Matthew's previous projects include a cameo appearance in Jack Neo's 2012 film Ah Boys to Men and a role in the Singapore and Hong Kong run of the Broadway Standard musical, Bugis Street: the Musical.
