This is a song sang by Irish and Liverpool men who, at the time of the Irish famine where sailing to Mexico to fight with the catholic forces of the Mexican army in the the Mexican-American war. Allot of these apparently went on to fight in the "St. Patrick's" brigade, or also know as the "San Patricios ". This was a brigade formed by Irish men who after been treated so poorly by the American army, and seen some of the acts of slaughter of the American army, defected to the Mexican army. There are still one of the most celebrated military brigades in Mexican History to this day.
