Steve's Story

Steve was born with a hole in his heart, 2 days after his first birthday, on Boxing Day, he was rushed into Great Ormond Street hospital in London. His family were told that he might not survive the night due to Pneumonia and fluid on the lungs which were caused by the leakage of the hole in his heart. Being the fighter that he is, Steve pulled through. His family were told he would be able to live a normal life but not be able to participate in physical activities because of the tiredness the heart defect would cause. Defying the odds and exceeding all expectation, Steve managed to lead an active and healthy childhood.

At 22, Steve was rushed to hospital with chest pains and underwent emergency heart surgery to remove a lump in his artery which was obstructing blood flow. The road to recovery lasted 12 months, but again, defying expectation, Steve was determined not to allow his condition to deter him from enjoying an active lifestyle.


Lila's Story

In July 2013, Lila was rushed to hospital suffering from severe chest pains. She had come down with a heavy case of the flu which had been steadily worsening. After an examination and X-ray it was discovered that Lila had a rare mass attached to her Thymus, situated close to the heart. More tests revealed that the mass was in fact a cricket ball sized tumor which would need to be removed as soon as possible. It was unknown at the time whether or not the tumor was cancerous. It all came as a great shock to Lila and her family as she had always been very healthy.

Lila underwent surgery soon after which proved to be a complete success. One week later she received test results regarding the tumor that had been removed, fortunately the growth was benign which came as a huge relief to everyone.

The initial incision of Lila's procedure was the same in nature to that of Steve's, meaning that they share strikingly similar scars on their chests. Both stories are inspiring and serve as a reminder that you never quite know what is waiting for you around the corner.
