Hugh Blair was a close friend of the composer Edward Elgar and dedicated the "Milton" Suite to him. It was first published in 1917 at the height of the First World War and is best interpreted in the light of the prevailing national mood.

Each of the four movements was inspired by lines which Blair selected from three works by the 17th century poet John Milton - Ode on Time, Comus, and Il Penseroso.

This is the first in a planned series of Blair works being prepared by Senlac Hill Publishing (SHP) among which is also his "Adoramus te" for brass, strings, and organ.
