Tien Cafe Blues live

"A few years ago there was a chinese food restauraunt in Malop st Geelong called the "Tien Wah Cafe" in the old days they used to add up your bill with an abacus and write it on your paper wrapping in chinese text! they have been closed for a number of years now.
They had the best spring rolls you could ever have, they were huge and they called them "chicken rolls" they probably werent that healthy for you but they tasted great when you had a few beers and one would almost be enough for a meal they were that big!
they had great dim sims too." LIFESTYLE FOOD

The Tien Wa was the best Chinese cafe I can remember, run by Mr and Mrs Lee, I grew up in Geelong. Those chicken rolls were just unbelievably yum, so too, the steamed dim sims -- best I have ever tasted. They also made the best special fried rice, for take away they used to sell it in a brown bag that was lined with greaseproof paper. This was before take away containers. Even earlier than that, we used to go there with our saucepans (when I was a little kid) and they would put your food into that to take away. The cafe was always packed on Friday and Saturday nights, I mean absolutely packed at the counter was at least 4 rows deep -- no kidding- for take away! Later, when I grew up I had a special meal, or two, or twenty or thirty there, in the cafe, with my boyfriend, later my husband, this was such a special thing and a great night out, across the road from the Carlton Hotel. Their food was so fantastic. I loved the prawns and cashews with crispy noodles. The Tien Wa as we knew it has been closed now for many years, it was sold to people who did not do it justice. It eventually closed completely, the facade of the building survived, but the rest faded into obscurity. Such a terrible shame!(There was also the Golden Vine in Moorabool Street run by Charlie, not bad, and a favourite of my Uncle Keith's, Whitehead.) I would also be absolutely thrilled to be able to buy some of those Chicken Rolls and freeze them for later, which is what I used to do every time I went back home to Geelong. Unfortunately those days are gone now, so is that wonderful food. Great memories!" LIFESTYLE FOOD
