DESCRIPTION:
As Time Goes By (Herman Hupfeld) Featured in Warner Bros. Picture "Casablanca" -- Jacques Renard & His Orchestra with Vocal Refrain (by Frank Munn?), Brunswick 1942 (re-issue of original recording from 1931)

NOTE: American composer Herman Hupfeld wrote "As Time Goes By" for the 1931 Broadway musical Everybody's Welcome. In the original show, it was sung by Frances Williams. It was recorded that year by Rudy Vallée, Fred Rich and Jacques Renard's Cocooanut Grove Orchestra. In terms of popularity at the time, it was a modest hit. The song was re-introduced in 1942 in the film Casablanca, sung by Dooley Wilson accompanied by pianist Elliot Carpenter and heard throughout the film as a leitmotif. Wilson was unable to record his version of the song at the time due to a musicians' strike, leading Brunswick to reissue the Jacques Renard's 1931 recording, as well as Victor to re-issue Vallée's 1931 recording and giving Vallee a number one hit in 1942.
Herman Hupfeld lived his whole life in Montclair, New Jersey and spent many hours at a watering hole Robin Hood Inn, built in 1922 on Valley Road. In this location, Hupfeld spent most of the time by the piano, playing and writing songs. A plaque located on Valley Road in Clifton, New Jersey commemorates the writing of "As Tim e Goes By". Although the building was extensively renovated in 2000--2003, the owners retained the plaque and left it where it was, on the second floor of the facility. Now, the song belongs to the set of international evergreens and famous line starting the chorus "You must remember this... " has been included into thesaurus of the popular "Casablanca" phrases, which are still frequently used throughout the world in the informal "yuppie speech".

E.g.
Annina: Monsieur Rick, what kind of a man is Captain Renault?
Rick: Oh, he's just like any other man, only more so.
--------------------------

Ilsa: Play it once, Sam. For old times' sake.
Sam: [lying] I don't know what you mean, Miss Ilsa.
Ilsa: Play it, Sam. Play "As Time Goes By."
Sam: [lying] Oh, I can't remember it, Miss Ilsa. I'm a little rusty on it.
Ilsa: I'll hum it for you. Da-dy-da-dy-da-dum, da-dy-da-dee-da-dum...
[Sam begins playing]
Ilsa: Sing it, Sam.
Sam: [singing] You must remember this / A kiss is still a kiss / A sigh is just a sigh / The fundamental things apply / As time goes by. / And when two lovers woo, / They still say, "I love you" / On that you can rely / No matter what the future brings-...
Rick: [rushing up] Sam, I thought I told you never to play-...
[Sees Ilsa. Sam closes the piano and rolls it away]
---------------------------------------------

Ilsa: I wasn't sure you were the same. Let's see, the last time we met...
Rick: Was La Belle Aurore.
Ilsa: How nice, you remembered. But of course, that was the day the Germans marched into Paris.
Rick: Not an easy day to forget.
Ilsa: No.
Rick: I remember every detail. The Germans wore gray, you wore blue.

--------------------------------------
Senor Ferrari: As the leader of all illegal activities in Casablanca, I am an influential and respected man.
-------------------------------------

Major Strasser: Are you one of those people who cannot imagine the Germans in their beloved Paris?
Rick: It's not particularly my beloved Paris.
Heinz: Can you imagine us in London?
Rick: When you get there, ask me!
Captain Renault: Hmmh! Diplomatist!
Major Strasser: How about New York?
Rick: Well there are certain sections of New York, Major, that I wouldn't advise you to try to invade.

-------------------------------------

Yvonne: Where were you last night?
Rick: That's so long ago, I don't remember.
Yvonne: Will I see you tonight?
Rick: I never make plans that far ahead.
---------------------------------------

Captain Renault: What in heaven's name brought you to Casablanca?
Rick: My health. I came to Casablanca for the waters.
Captain Renault: The waters? What waters? We're in the desert.
Rick: I was misinformed.
