Mavado, born David Brooks, has already for several years been the most important modern Jamaican dancehall artist with strings of #1 hits both in Jamaica and abroad. His rise to fame started in 2004 on Daseca's Anger Management riddim with his hit "Real McKoy". Part of Bounty Killer's Alliance camp, he quickly became one of the most hyped young artists in Jamaica with his raspy yet clear singjay voice that delivered, song after song, rough-edged stories of ghetto reality with catchy hooks. His early tunes "Weh Dem A Do" and "Top Shotta Nah Miss" were big hits in dancehall circles all around the world.

His first album, "Gangster For Life : The Symphony Of David Brooks", was released in 2007 on VP Records and spent over a year on the reggae Billboard chart's top positions. As well as presenting the rough "Gullyside"-born streetwise gangsta Mavado was already known to be, the album also had undertones of a deeper philosophy with more serious tunes like "Sadness" and "Dying".

When "On The Rock" was released in 2008, it quickly became clear that it would be one of the biggest dancehall tunes for the whole year. It also caught the attention of hip hop superstar Jay Z, who recorded a remix of the tune, being his first dancehall collabo ever. This was followed by collaborations with numerous well known hip hop & r'n'b artists such as Busta Rhymes, Lil Wayne, G Unit, Flo-Rida, Wyclef Jean, Lil Kim, Akon and Rick Ross (to name a few). He was also featured in the video game GTA IV (with more than 17 million copies sold worldwide), delivering his music even further worldwide. Both "On The Rock" and "So Special", the single for his 2008 album "Mr Brooks.. A Better Tomorrow" made the Billboard single charts and were featured on mainstream urban radio in the US as well as getting consistent heavy dancehall & mixshow play worldwide. The new album went even further into "deeper" socially conscious themes.

The year 2009 in Jamaican music was dominated by a rivalry between two of the most popular young artists; Mavado and Vybz Kartel. The artists spewed tune after tune of musical attacks on each other, counteracting each other's arguments and, in the process, becoming even more popular among their own supporters. When the supporters started taking the rivalry serious also in real life in schools and on the streets, however, the artists made a choice to publicly end their rivalry. This was also clearly reflected in the themes of Mavado's songs from since. Last year he's had major hits in Jamaica with positively charged tunes like "Starlight", "Hope And Pray" and "Messiah" and also delivered numerous big tunes for his female fans with tunes like "Come Into My Room" (with Stacious) and the brand new "Stulla", "Starbwoy" and "Girls Dem Love We" (with Shaggy).
