For Big Sid - Max Roach Drum Solo Performed by Stephen Clark - Video
PUBLISHED:  Jun 14, 2015
DESCRIPTION:
Stephen Clark's performance of "For Big Sid," as it was played by Max Roach on his 1966 album, "Drums Unlimited."

This famous Max Roach drum solo is a perfect example of Roach’s melodic playing style. A pioneer of melodic soloing on the drumset, Max Roach’s solos would not only include technically challenging passages filled with notes, but would also have a distinct form with a recurring theme. Inspired by jazz drummers at the head of the bebop movement, Roach watched with fascination and sought to develop his own unique style and contribution to drumming. That he did, and his work of drumming art entitled “For Big Sid” serves to prove that the drumset can be a melodic instrument.

This performance (Oct. 26, 2014) was part of my Senior Recital, required for my Music Performance degree at Reinhardt University.
I am playing a Gretsch jazz kit with Avedis Zildjian cymbals, and the audio was recorded by a pair of condensers over the center of the stage.
