CRYIN’ OVER YOU, The Cruisers, (V-Tone #213) 1960
Flipside: DON’T TEASE ME Here’s another great uncharted song from my collection. The Cruisers hailed from Washington DC. Group members were Eugene (Gene) Williams, Paul Long, McKinley Anthony and Randy Hamilton and were all neighborhood friends. They came up with their name, The Cruisers, from member Paul Long having served in the Navy on a cruiser.

They performed in and around Washington, DC and decided they wanted to record an original song, “IF I KNEW”, that lead singer Eugene Williams wrote. Realizing there weren’t too many opportunities to record in DC, they headed to Philadelphia and performed the local club scene in Philly for a while.

Eventually they were introduced to V-Tone records, a Philadelphia label. It was for V-Tone they recorded their first single “IF I KNEW” - the original song lead singer Eugene Williams had written.

They would follow that up with their 2nd release, “CRYING OVER YOU” V-Tone #213 - 1960. Although the 2 songs had some success on the East Coast, neither song charted nationally and because of a lack of finances the group was forced to move back to Washington DC. Eugene Williams remained in Philadelphia and later formed the singing group The Strollers and recorded a great ballad: “THERE’S NO ONE BUT YOU” Carlton #546 – 1961.

In 1967 Eugene Williams was asked to re-form The Cruisers and record for another well-known Philadelphia record label, Gamble records. The Cruisers recorded a great song, in fact one of my favorites, “I NEED YOU SO” Gamble #207. “I NEED YOU SO” was originally recorded and written by Tommy McLain. They recorded their second single for Gamble, “PICTURE US” - #4000 in 1970.

Enjoy this great ballad “CRYIN’ OVER YOU” by The Cruisers with Eugene Williams singing lead!
