The exercise involves playing the Major scale (Ionian Mode) ascending and the next Major scale descending, chromatically through all 12 keys whist staying in the same fret board area, i.e. between frets 1-5, 5-9 and 9-13.
I also apply this exercise to other modes/scales and arpeggios, and also use different intervals to connect them, such as 4ths and 5ths.
