Similar resonating effects with staccato from open piano strings can be obtained on an acoustic piano (without harmonic pedal) by weighing down all the keys you will not play in the piece, i.e. far right and left, with weights, such as books. This raises the dampers from this strings and allows them to resonate when notes with sympathetic frequencies are played.

The difference between this technique, used occasionally in 20th century music and the harmonic pedal, is the harmonic pedal allows ALL the strings to be un-dampened across the full range of the piano when the pedal is half pressed in resonance position. When notes are played, dampers return instantly to those played notes on key release, allowing a pianist to play staccato while at the same time, having a glow of harmonic resonance, especially noticeable in a home-studio/music room. The harmonic pedal, unlike books on keys, can be lifted and pressed as a pianist feels necessary, and passed into traditional damper and even sostenuto without lifting the foot from the pedal. The harmonic pedal is in effect, three pedals in one.
