“Rock roots” don’t go much deeper than those of Paul Downing, who played guitar in the band that backed the original The Mamas & The Papas, toured with Herman’s Hermits, and played in a recent incarnation of The Standells. Here, he pays tribute to Buddy Holly, who would’ve turned 80 today. Paul’s using a late-model Strat in Daphne Blue plugged into a ’61 Klemt Echolette running to a 1960 4x10 Bassman.
