Branding its music as Afro-Funk, this collective combines the groove of Funk with the intensity of Rock, the passion of Soul with the verve of Jazz, staying deeply rooted in a strong Afrobeat. Their sound is driven by a strong message of social justice inspiring one to reflect.

PAPAGROOVE was established in 2006. The passion and charisma of the singer’s stage presence frontlines an impressive four piece brass section, backed by an explosive rhythm section. The exceptional musical chemistry and improvisational talent shared by the band members creates unique moments at each and every show. The band’s debut album, “We’re Not Blind” (Anubis/Outside Music), was officially released in 2008 during the International Montreal Jazz Festival. This first opus counts among its collaborators David Sturton, sound engineer for Bran Van 3000 and Jean Leloup, as well as David Ngohdefikko from Cameroon, member of Fela Kuti’s legendary band, Egypt 80. Touring across Canada to promote its highly praised first album, the
band shared festival stages with the likes of Stevie Wonder, K’naan, Cat Empire and Medeski Martin and Wood, amongst others.

“Civilized Ghetto”, PAPAGROOVE’s second album, was born out of the unification of its twelve member’s creativity and audacity. Making use of new sounds and socially committed lyrics, this most recent effort is a witness to their conscious, global and urban views of the world around them. Recorded at Studio La Centrale, produced by Maxime Audet-Halde (2012 Juno awards nominee in the World music album of the year category for “Afo Gné”, by Aboulaye Koné Moriké, and winner of the 2012 world music album of the year at l’ADISQ for “Les fauves”, by Echo Kalyspo), and co-produced by Jean-François Ouellet, “Civilized Ghetto” honours the ardour that gave PAPAGROOVE its charm on its first album, “We’re Not Blind”. The lyrics of this second opus are signed and delivered by Sébastien Francisque with his funky/soul voice, backed by actual and catchy sounds

Qualifiant sa musique d’Afro-Funk, le collectif crée un son nouveau alliant le groove du funk à l’intensité du rock, les élans de la soul à la verve du jazz, le tout bien enraciné dans un afrobeat robuste. Le discours véhiculé ajoute une dimension sociale qui mène à la réflexion.

PAPAGROOVE est établi depuis 2006. La fougue et la présence scénique hors du commun du chanteur mène l’imposante section de cuivres et repose sur une section rythmique explosive. La complicitié exceptionnelle et les talents d’improvisateurs des membres du
groupe créent des moments uniques à chacun de ses spectacles. Le premier album, «We’re not blind » (Anubis/Outside Music), a été officiellement lancé en 2008 dans le cadre du Festival International de Jazz de Montréal. Parcourant le Canada avec ce premier album reçu avec éloges par la critique, le groupe a partager la scène de festivals avec Stevie Wonder, K’naan, Cat Empire et Medeski Martin and wood.

«Civilized Ghetto », deuxième album du groupe, est le fruit d’un aboutissement artistique réunissant la créativité et l’audace de chacun de ses douze membres. Ce plus récent effort témoigne de la vision globale, urbaine et conscientisée de leur réalité. Utilisant des sons
nouveaux et des textes engagés, le groupe se renouvelle et est fier de vous présenter son deuxième opus. Enregistré au studio La Centrale, réalisé par Maxime Audet-Halde (nomination au Juno Awards 2012 dans la catégorie Album world de l’année pour l’album
«Afo Gné» d’Aboulaye Koné Moriké) et co-réalisé par Jean-François Ouellet, les textes de «Civilized Ghetto » sont signés par Sébastien Francisque. L’aspect musical de l’album est le résultat de sessions hebdomadaires et est caractérisé par la complémentarité
des membres du groupe. L’objectif de PAPAGROOVE est bien précis: se renouveler constamment musicalement afin de continuer de toucher le plus grand public possible.
