MERCREDI SOIR PASSE (LAST WEDNESDAY NIGHT) KEVIN NAQUIN AND THE OSSUN PLAYBOYS Swallow Records - 2006

A review by Paule Pachter – February 10, 2007

There are many music journalists who feel that Kevin Naquin and the Ossun Playboys are a Cajun band on the verge of making it. I think that after five CDs on the Swallow Records label, and with this latest release, “Mercredi Soir Passe” containing his most original material to date that, Naquin has truly arrived. The lively accordionist who looks like he can be a star college quarterback has an exciting flare to his music, which is only matched by the energetic way that he and his band mates deliver the goods.

Sure, Kevin Naquin has been inspired by such Cajun notables as Steve Riley, and his own grandfathers, Hadley Fontenot and Eduis Naquin, but he breaks out on this CD with an extremely upbeat menu of songs that please the palate including “Ayou mon Tennis Shoes;” “Got You On My Mind;” “Evangeline Special;” “Opelousas Sostan;” and a soulful rendition of “Tee Na Na.”

Naquin’s talents on the accordion and his vocal style are first rate. The talented members of The Ossun Playboys supporting him are: Dwayne Lavergne (drums); Derek Dugas (bass and vocals); Louis Dronet (fiddles), and Murnel Babineaux (steel guitar). “Mercredi Soir Passe” earns a four-pepper rating. So go ‘re-sole yo dancing shoes” and pick up your copy online from the artist’s website at: www.ossunplayboys.com
