Ted Weems (born Wilfred Theodore Weymes) 1901 - 1963

He was the leader of a popular band in Chicago and midwest in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Good semi-hot and dance style, performed novelties well. Played violin in West Philadelphia Symphony in high school. Educated a University of Pennsylvania and played trombone in dance band. Formed his own band 1922 with his brother Art.. His early hit record "Somebody Stole My Girl" late 1923. Toured and performed mostly in the midwest. Important bookings at Atlantic City Steel Pier and Kansas City's Muehlbach Hotel. Moved to Chicago in late 1929 and had good radio coverage plus his big hit "Piccolo Pete." His band featured many popular singing stars including Art Jarrett, Parker Gibbs, Red Ingle, Country Washburne and Elmo Tanner. Joe Haymes contributed many of the arrangements. Young baritone, Perry Como joined in 1936. In the early 1930s the band was on radio with Jack Benny, James Melton and Fibber McGee and Molly. He disbanded in 1942 to join the merchant marines. His career was aided in the late 1940s with the reissue 'Heartaches" from his 1933 record. His popularity waned in the 1950s and worked as a disk jockey on Memphis radio around 1955. In the 1960s, he settled in Dallas, booked jobs and led band occasionally.
