Red Tara, (Tibetan: drol ma mar mo): Red in colour with one face and two hands, the right hand is in the mudra (gesture) of supreme generosity holding a red vase extended across the knee. The left hand is held to the heart with the thumb and forefinger holding the stem of a red and blue utpala flower blossoming at the left ear. Slightly fierce, with three eyes and youthful, she is adorned with flowing silks of green and blue, adorned with gold and jewel ornaments, gold tiara and the like; seated with the right leg slightly extended in a relaxed manner and the left drawn up. On a moon disc and multi-coloured lotus seat encircled by a blue-orange nimbus and an red areola she sits surrounded by a lush green landscape. At the front, in a golden bowl, auspicious fruit is offered.

Red Tara is a "magnetizing" and even erotic aspect of the Goddess Tara. There are both Hindu and Buddhist forms of Tara and of Kurukulle. This article and associated references all focus on the Buddhist Tara as practiced in the Indo-Tibetan tradition of esoteric ( tantric ) Buddhism.

What is the purpose of doing such a "tantric" practice? There is a broad range of reasons based in "self-development". These include
* development of psycho-physical energy and balance and power
* development of emotional balance, sensitivity and harmony
* generating a bright and clear energy field ( aura )
* purification of negative, confused, divisive and self-defeating mental states and the opening up of expansive, pure sky-like awareness.

In short, the purpose is to become a more fully conscious and high functioning human being. The basis is actual whole person practice founded on lineage teaching, not mere religious belief and the naive hope for "pie in the sky, bye and bye." In other words, what is put forward is spiritual discipline rather than dualistic theology.

Tibetan words for Red Tara mean - She Who is the Cause of Knowledge. Red Tara, or Kurukulla may use suffering to foster our healing and courage. Even in Her wrathful aspects, Tara's role is to dispel the fear of death and foster the evolution of compassion. She represents a protective force which fights off demons and wicked spirits. Perhaps, as Her syno-deity Kali is prone to do, lusting insatiably for death. Red Tara is powerfully able to magnify all good things.

Red Tara has the amazing ability of enchantment or bewitchment - evocatively convincing you to transform. She is Goddess of love and sex and is commonly associated with magick. She represents the function of having people succumb under our power, of enchanting, bewitching, attracting, subjugating, magnetizing them – very Gorgonic if we think about it! As Red Tara, She teaches Discriminating Awareness about created phenomena, and how to turn raw desire into compassion and love.
