Ole Børud - She's Like No Other (Tribute to Mothers) - Video
PUBLISHED:  May 01, 2016
DESCRIPTION:
8th track from "Keep Movin" (2011). "She's Like No Other" is Ole's tribute to his mother, and it's a smooth, upbeat, melodic, soul/Westcoast tune somewhere in the neighborhood of Pages, Gino Vannelli, Steely Dan, Toto, Chicago, and The Doobie Brothers.

Wowzers! I haven't been this excited about a "new" artist since I discovered State Cows a couple years ago. Like State Cows, Ole is from Scandinavia (specifically Norway, where they celebrate Mother's Day in February, btw) and he possesses one of the finest voices I've heard in a long time. It sounds like it's been auto-tuned until you hear him live (in my case via YouTube) and you realize that's truly the way he sounds—so smooth, so pure, and so perfectly on pitch it'll bring tears to your eyes!

And then there's his musical style. Amazingly (to me at least), he crosses easily back and forth between metal and smooth, but lately he's become known for, well, as Wikipedia says, "Børud [has] adopted a Westcoast funk, r&b, and soul style, and his latest release, Stepping Up, is described as jazz pop in the vein of Steely Dan and Stevie Wonder. Other noted influences include Quincy Jones, George Duke, Earth, Wind and Fire, Prince and Toto."

So he's versatile. And Børud is certainly the real deal. He comes from good stock, musically speaking, being the son of Norwegian gospel singer Arnold Børud. He began performing music at age five as a singer in his family's Christian pop group Børud-gjengen, later renamed Arnold B. Family, which is apparently a pretty big deal in Norway.

And not only can he sing, but he can also play the guitar (bass and drums as well). Ola Gränshagen at Melodic.net says "Some people just have it all. There are a couple of guitar solos by Ole, that both JAY GRAYDON and TIM PIERCE or DANN HUFF would have been proud of. How does he do it? One fine example is the solo in the final song 'Resting Day'; another PAGES influenced tune where I also think of NIELSEN/PEARSON's self-titled album."

And as if all that weren't enough, there are Ole's live performances that absolutely seal the deal. Quoting Gränshagen again, "I mentioned the 10-man band backing up Ole Börud live (the horn section alone makes such a difference! It's magic! This is like hearing PAGES á la 2011, and you get weak at the knees). Well, I watched and heard them on 5 April 2011 in Stockholm. It was the best concert I have ever seen and heard live! The songs get another dimension, and it was such a flawless performance it had me almost knocked down. Take ANY chance you might get to attend to an OLE BÖRUD concert. You will be amazed."

There. 'Nuff said—well, for now, anyway. Not all of Ole's songs fit comfortably into the smooth Yacht Rock sound I love, but I hope to upload a select number of his song's in the near future, my smooth picks if you will.

In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this song and video, and hope everyone has a wonderful and meaningful Mother's Day! A godly mother, if you're lucky enough to have one, is about the greatest blessing one can have in this lifetime. "Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her." (Proverbs 21:38)
