Tommy Overstreet "Old Flame" - Video
PUBLISHED:  Jul 14, 2014
DESCRIPTION:
Well, here's a cut from Tommy's 1982 "Nuggets" album, where he gets what I call the "51 West Treatment", since as I've stated before, the label was one that would round up artists past their commercial prime at the time (like Cal Smith, Freddy Weller, Ferlin Husky, etc) and do albums full of cover tunes. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't. Tommy's falls roughly in the middle to me, as probably half the tracks work and half of them don't. Not that he doesn't sing well, but you get some weird mismatches between the song and the artist's style, like the tracks were just randomly selected. Sorry, Tommy doing Merle Haggard's "My Own Kind Of Hat" doesn't work. This one, his take on the #1 hit by Alabama is pretty successful, so take a listen and enjoy!
