Taking a brief respite from the familiar flavors that Kolourbridge tends to offer, the New York-based future electronic label lends a nod to a more dystopian soundscape with the release of Nukage’s new EP, titled “Illusion.” Borrowing inspirations from heavy bass music warlords a la Skrillex and Seven Lions, paired with the compositional game music prowess of the likes of Nobuo Uematsu, Nukage, formally known as Tom Myruski, drops a collection of beats that are as seismic as they are meticulously well-written.

Illusion begins with its titular track, setting the stage for a desolate, epic aural landscape as the backdrop is painted with arpeggiated synths and a religious vocal chant before unleashing a mechanical monstrosity of a nu-metal inspired beat accompanied by massive sonic machinations. The listener is then ferried into a more icier landscape with Cold Musings, which climaxes into a titanic dubstep drop with a sound that pays respects to artists such as Au5 and Fractal. Going the extra mile in his melodic storytelling, Nukage ends the EP with a bang in Cinco de Neuro, a bone-chilling drum and bass tune with an old-school mad scientist vibe.
