Riqi Harawira - Greenstone and Gold - Video
PUBLISHED:  Oct 18, 2013
DESCRIPTION:
"Ahakoa he iti, He Pounamu" is a well known Whakatauki (maori proverb) that describes the heartiness contained in something small. This describes the essence of Greenstone and Gold. Pounamu (greenstone, jade) is a metaphor used to describe something precious and treasured (taonga).
A song about our staunchly nuclear free Aotearoa. A place that stands on its own from our distinct Maori culture and language to our unique biodiversity (plant life and animals),and the majesty of our alps, rich forests, beautiful coast lines and seas. The inspiration behind Greenstone and gold comes from The Maori haka and Pokare kare ana, by combing the synergy from those two elements to create a patriotic anthem that could sing at a rugby match, All blacks game or the Olympics. We kiwis punch above our weight in all spheres of human endeavour including our efforts in the olympic games, for a country with only 4 million people we do remarkably well on the medals table. Greenstone and gold is dedicated to our olympic athletes. This waiata (song) is not only for New Zealanders, but also as a calling card to the world, saying welcome to our beautiful slice of heaven, this is Aotearoa, a supernatural land and place with its own uniqueness, culture, tradition, history and magic that can only come from the new world, the South Pacific. Respect the land, respect the people. Aroha ki te tangata.
