DESCRIPTION:
Junjun ‘Junky’ Cao formed Torturing Nurse in Shanghai in 2004, disillusioned with trying to make his point via more trad rock moves and undeterred by the small audiences their caustic assaults drew from the local populace. ‘Most people in Shanghai can’t take the kind of noise that we make. To be honest, most people can barely accept things that are anti-rhythm and anti-melody, let alone the kind of violence that is contained in the noise we make. We don’t perform with the intention of shocking people, we just like doing this stuff – but most people can’t take it.’
As China has opened up its economic and cultural borders, word and acclaim for Junky and co’s brutal sound has spread via the irrepressible international noise grapevine, helped no doubt by releases such as Sub Rosa’s An Anthology Of Chiense Experimental Music 1992-2008 and ever-borderless tape/cdr trade routes.
We’re excited to bring you this deafening glimpse into the Chinese underground, a musical world that, despite the above, is still relatively unknown to us in the UK. It’s already very evident that TUSK audiences react most excitedly to eviscerating Asian sonic brutalism and no doubt you’ll all stagger away from this with delirious grins on your melted faces.
