NeWt is the 2012 Scottish Jazz Ensemble of the year award winning trio from Edinburgh, Scotland.
A five day residency on Unst in 2012 inspired the trio to devise a new musical work inspired by their surroundings, the stories of Unst, it’s history and unique community spirit. Culminating in a performance of a live-streaming concert for the inaugural Shetland Jazz Festival, this visceral performance became the album and the images and videos shot while they wandered, trekked, composed and rehearsed remain as the backdrop to this unique audio-visual composition.
The trio described as “...something Stravinsky might have put together had he been a jazz musician...” (Selwyn Harris – Jazzwise) NeWt North Suite will now be augmented at Celtic Connections 2017 by other extraordinary musicians, allowing the project a grander realisation than ever before. Combing the multi-instrumental hothouse of Su-a Lee (Cello/Musical Saw), Greg Lawson (Violin/Mandolin) and prior collaborator Fraser Fifield (Pipes/Whistle/Saxophones) this production will be a vital and sonic treat for the ears, eyes, heart and soul.
