Lush - Video
PUBLISHED:  Aug 20, 2009
DESCRIPTION:
The video is simply up as a vehicle for the audio. A beautiful melodic composition written and recorded on a night when I happened to mention to Guitarist Field Monroe how I had recently noticed many song types using descending chords (ala "Whiter Shade of Pale") and that we should try writing one that just go's down, chromatically that is. As usual the task was accompanied by Fields standard requirement of no talking (discussion about the song)...during the writing process.... Just play it man! We did and about 4am the song had written itself.... We quickly put it down on a little TASCAM 8 trk and that is what I have put up here, warts and all. We tried re-recording it proper more than once (click track etc) but we just couldn't ever get the same feeling and/or improve the audio overall.
To me the song in It's beautiful major mode uses layers of acoustic guitar strings (Line 6 Variax) and end up so very sweet sounding... I think it's easier to write dissonance or minor stuff, just like it's easier to hit the wrong note than a perfect one... but try writing a major based tune without sounding too much like a nursery rhyme .... Of course nowadays everything is based on crappy flat 5's or similar weirdness....
QUESTION .... I ask you this........... When you're asleep and dreaming.... What music do you dream? What type of soundtrack is naturally and always heard.. What is it, in between your ears that accompanies the visual imagines you are imagining? What sounds are you dreaming you're hearing? I don't hate myself and I don't dream nightmares so when I do dream it will be pleasurable for me. Of course it must be good and what I like because it's my choice. Weird, harmless mischief ? Sure Yes I like it.
Here in San Pedro / Los Angeles, I went out in the past and asked people this question personally and the answer came back to me 100% of the time the same. Dreams are in a major key!

Major scales in a major key produce smiles and general happiness. Disney-sque melodies from back in the days when every pop song and every Disney original musical score was formulaticly composed in Major for a reason. It works. Tears flow easier in dramatic scenes. We are subconsciously affected by certain frequencies that influence human emotions in real time and serve a purpose on the silver screen or on today's big TV's too.
I don't know how long it's been going on but it is been a quite a while and that's a good thing. Right? Wrong! Manipulation without permission is a crime .
Thankfully they haven't started using flat five tri tones yet!
Son now you know. Some future day when you're asked what music you dream the answer will be the same.
Dreams are in natural tones....tunes.... notes that are based on western major scales.... nightmares not included.... now I must go ask some Chinese.
