FEMININE WEAPON: Nancy Danino - Video
PUBLISHED:  Apr 08, 2014
DESCRIPTION:
It was a fateful leg-break in her youth that turned Nancy Danino onto her lifelong passion for music. Her father -- seeking to entertain his bedridden eleven year-old -- purchased a reel-to-reel recorder and Nancy would sit on her bed playing songs while simultaneously recording herself sing. Her leg healed, but Nancy continued singing and hasn't stopped. By eighteen she was in a band and at twenty-two her name was on an album. Now she's ready to release her latest solo album, Testify. The album, co-written by Nancy and Swedish songwriter Anders Hansson, features sensual melodies floating between Norah Jones and Sade.

Nancy, born to Moroccan parents in Israel and raised primarily in France, has no shortage of cultural inspiration in her life and music. After eight years in New York she's added another country to her resume and has, for now, found a home. Nancy is grateful for the confluence of cultures in her life, believing herself to be a true citizen of world rather than only identifying with a single place or mindset. Still, having roots in so many places has its drawbacks. "I always feel like I'm missing something," Nancy says. "If I'm in New York I miss my family in Paris, or being in Israel. If I'm in Israel I feel I should be in New York singing and recording."

This past summer, Nancy visited Morocco for the first time. The weeks-long voyage with her mother was a journey in time, a daughter seeing and experiencing her familial roots for the first time. "It was like completing a beautiful circle," Nancy says of the experience. During that time Nancy was asked to perform in Morocco where she introduced her new music and received excellent reviews.
