NETTLE - Self-Titled - Video
PUBLISHED:  Jun 07, 2016
DESCRIPTION:
Alright, so I’ve been just a teensy-weensy bit distracted for these past four days. I’ve been posting stuff that I wanted to post, as opposed to tending to the requests that I’ve had sitting on the backburner for well over a week now. Is that rude of me to do? Nah, I told y’all you’d have your video up inna week or so, and I’m acting on the latter-half of the proposition. “Or so” in this case means approximately eleven days, as that’s how long it’s been since I agreed to post this. That ain’t too shabby, if you ask me. That’s about how long it takes for international shipping between some countries, really. If some of you are patient enough to wait for eleven days for your inflatable sex doll from Thailand, you’re more than capable of waiting eleven days for a video.

This is Nettle, a self-prescribed “fast, twangy hardcore/punk band [that’s] mostly from Langley, BC” (That’s Langley, British Columbia, up in Canada, for any of you nitwits out there who slept through geography class… wait, geology is the one about rocks, right?). The reason the phrase “mostly from” is thrown in there is because one of the group’s members lives up in Vancouver; he played in Oaf and a handful of other bands from that region. Now, Oaf’s a name that I haven’t heard in a good long while. They were one of the first few bands I uploaded to this wonderful channel o’ mine back when I didn’t know what the fuck I was doing, that was almost a year ago at this point. It’s kinda cool to have one of that guy’s projects see itself back on the Jimmy after all this time, it makes me feel a little fuzzy in my tummy and want to reminisce on my life: It was pretty terrible and still is. But hey, I’ve conned a few dozen people into thinking that I’m a credible punk on the internet, so that’s sweet. They’ll all come to their senses eventually though, give ‘em time.

I wouldn’t dare compare Nettle to Oaf though, they’re a sharp contrast that only really retains the latter group’s screaming tempo. The same aggression and intensity is all there, it’s just permeating through in a different way. Less confrontational, more peppy and bratty, it’s definitely on the lighter-end of the hardcore spectrum, for the most part. That’s not to say that this doesn’t hit hard though; in fact, that first track “Get Out” is such a damn doozy, it had me totally on board with Nettle within the first twenty seconds. The way it starts with an innocent, lively punk riffs before degenerating into bouncy hardcore makes for a really invigorating transition. That trend remains constant within the four tracks of this demo, and I still can’t get enough of it. It’s a delicate balance that edges on both melodiousness and sheer aggression, and doesn’t step over either of those boundaries to keep their music from being fun. There’s even a few segments where Nettles turns down the intensity dial and resorts to a slower, more crushing pace, namely in the last track “Dispose”, that can still get heads bobbing and feet stomping. Nettle’s in this weird grey area for me, where I know it’s hardcore punk, but my mind still perceives it as a perky instance of punk with a shitload of moxie. It’s not often that you want to shake your booty to hardcore, but I’m definitely feeling it here.
