DESCRIPTION: Although the world's forest area has been declining for centuries, it is in the last half of the 20th century that the process has accelerated to alarming proportions. Since the 1960s there has been a major change in the rate at which tropical forests are being cleared. In contrast, the area of temperate forests in developed countries grew by 0.1 per cent in the 1980s.
