David Lynch's "Sycamore Trees" (Jimmy Scott) on bass shakuhachi flute by Cornelius 深禅 Boots - Video
PUBLISHED:  Sep 20, 2014
DESCRIPTION:
Live from at the University of Mississippi: the Nutt Auditorium at Ole Miss. September 3, 2014. Performed and arranged by Cornelius 深禅 (Shinzen) Boots on a 2.74 jinashi Taimu shakuhachi made by Ken LaCosse of Mujitsu Shakuhachi in San Francisco. Video by Charlie Miles, concert sponsored by Vandoren and facilitated by Dr. Michael Rowlett.

This piece is originally an incredible, moody vocal piece written by Angelo Badalamenti and David Lynch for the series finale of "Twin Peaks" and was performed by the inimitable Jimmy Scott. It has been my favorite song of all time for 20 years and suddenly I realized, "This can be arranged for Taimu, as part of my Renegade Nature Music series." This is repertoire drawn from various sources intended to augment the traditional shakuhachi classical repertoire, honkyoku, that was itself derived from Buddhist philosophy, chant, and Nature.

These are wide-bore, jinashi, root-end bamboo flutes. The Taimu excels at achieving a tone that is very earthy and glowing at the same time as projecting more than older style large Zen bamboo flutes (hocchiku, kyotaku for instance.) Taimu are made by Mujitsu Shakuhachi in San Francisco and more information about Taimu and mukyoku can be found on this website:

Cornelius Boots is a breath wizard and renegade Zen flute adept known primarily as the leader and composer of the world's only original bass clarinet quartet, Edmund Welles.Cornelius is the first student of Grandmaster Michael Chikuzen Gould to have earned a Shihan (master teaching license) and was given the shakuhachi name 深禅 "Shinzen" (depth Zen or deep Zen). In addition to teaching, Cornelius has recorded and written, in shakuhachi calligraphic notation, a series of 27 etudes (mukyoku) for Taimu shakuhachi. He plays all types of flutes, but specializes in jinashi and large-bore shakuhachi.
