PUBLISHED:  Feb 22, 2010
DESCRIPTION:
Born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, David Maslanka (1943-2017) studied at Oberlin College with Joseph Wood. He later did graduate work at Michigan University with renowned band composer H. Owen Reed.
Maslanka today is probably America's premier wind composer, with many short works for wind ensemble and, particularly, a series of Symphonies for Band which we at Albany are proud to have in our catalog. This disc continues the series of Maslanka works with the Illinois State University Symphonic Winds under Stephen K. Steele, in addition to other highly acclaimed recordings featuring many other significant composers. Albany TROY1130

A world premiere recording by one of America's most inspired composers.

The major work on this recording of music for wind ensemble by David Maslanka is Unending Stream of Life. Inspired by the hymn tune, All Creatures of Our God and King, Unending Stream of Life consists of seven songs for wind ensemble, each embodying the original tune, or relating to it in some way. The title comes from the Vietnamese Buddhist monk, Thich Nhat Hanh.

REVIEW:
"If you don't know the wonderfully life-affirming music of David Maslanka, by all means get online and hasten to acquire this excellent disc. The composer is one of the best we have...Maslanka has definitely brought wind music to the fore, easily competing with any number of more well-known orchestral composers, and also easily toppin many of them. ...Good stuff all around, and worthy of the heartiest recommendation."
