The idea follows from a reflection on the use of the technology which pervades every object surrounding us today.
Nowadays, technology is everywhere: energy is used to produce devices, to operate them, to dispose of them. With Megaphone we meant to create a completely low tech product which aims at making one reflect upon the importance of things and the potential value of everything that surrounds us.On the other side, in clear contrast, stands the technological device par excellence: the mobile phone, which is widely used and which at times has even become a status symbol, as in the case of the iPhone.
We have tried to put into practice the wise teachings of our grandfathers, that is to say to always try to optimize everything we have and to reduce waste. We have focused on emphasizing, developing and making the most of what we already had at our disposal. We have worked on the sound performance of the iPhone 4 speakers, which is fairly good in itself but not enough to fill a room. Then we have started to study how to passively amplify this device, without introducing "technology" and without using supplementary energy for it. We have developed and tested different design solutions always striving to strike a balance between shape and function, in order to optimize both the acoustic performance and the aesthetic side of the object.
To underline both this "return to the roots" and the low tech side of MegaPhone, we have chosen traditional materials used in ancient manufacture: wood and ceramic. Ceramic is a glassy material which helps conveying sound vibrations, while the tripod, which is made of hardwood, is designed to minimize the contact area between the body and the base. Wood is the first material man has used to try out his creativity building tools and handy objects.
The materials we have chosen are natural, eco friendly and have always been a part of our environment. They belong to human culture in a deeper way than plastic and electronics do.
The idea was conceived, developed and produced entirely in Italy. The tripod is made of Italian Walnut, the Italian wood par excellence, used by our ancestors to build anything from houses to the tools we use everyday, like ladles or tableware. The ceramic used for the body of MegaPhone is produced in Nove, in the province of Vicenza, a town renowned for its traditional ceramics. Since the 18th Century, Nove has been a leading centre in the production of ceramics; at that time, its high quality products were even compared to Chinese porcelain. The clay used to build the body of Megaphone comes from Montelupo Fiorentino, a town a few kilometers away from Florence. During the Renaissance, Montelupo was one of the prominent centres of production of ceramics both at national and European levels. Remains of ceramics from Montelupo Fiorentino were found in the archaeological sites connected with the first European settlements in Central America, as well as in the Philippines and in Scotland. With MegaPhone we are ready to continue this tradition of bringing the Italian earth all over the world.
Suddenly, man becomes again the discoverer of the world that surrounds him; he goes back to studying in depth what he has in order to make the best of it, and smiles again in front of the "magic" outcome. We say "magic" because as soon as the iPhone is placed on the MegaPhone, the effect produced is simply amazing. We are not used anymore to the magic of nature, to the magic of simple things.
Through MegaPhone we want to make people smile in wonder, to make them reflect upon the value of what they already have.
