"Greensleeves" ~ Morning Multi-Minstrel Musical Menagerie ~ FlaRF11 - Video
PUBLISHED:  Jun 19, 2011
DESCRIPTION:
The classic "Greensleeves" sung by Owain Phyfe with instrumental performances by musicians from Wolgemut, Celtic Mayhem, Iron Hill Vagabonds, The Harper and The Minstrel, Revelers' Round, The New World Renaissance Band, and more.

This was filmed on Feb 27, 2011 at the Florida Renaissance Festival, at Quiet Waters Park in Deerfield Beach, Florida, during a special early-morning session held just after the gates had opened. This session was really for the fun of the musicians to do a little bit of jamming together for themselves before the festival day started, and represents a mix-up of most of the musical groups at the fair.

This particular performance features:

(1) Owain Phyfe (from the New World Renaissance Band) on lead vocals and Chitarra Battente (an type of Italian Renaissance guitar).

(2) Michael Gartner (aka "Micha" from Wolgemut) on his authentic replica of a medieval vielle.

(3) Jack Stamates (from Celtic Mayhem) on the violin

(4) Conrado "Charry" Garcia (from Cantiga, New World Renaissance Band, and others) playing a charrango

(5) Brothers Mark and Ehrich Gauvin (from the Iron Hill Vagabonds), with Ehrich playing violin and Mark playing guitar.

(6) The husband-and-wife team of Jay and Abby Michaels (The Harper and The Minstrel), with Jay playing the celtic harp, and Abby playing her bowed psaltery.

(7) Another husband-and-wife team of Bret Blackshear and Kathleen Finnegan-Blackshear, with Bret playing the cello and Kathleen playing the celtic harp.

(8) Tyler Morrison (from Revelers' Round Dance Company) playing large recorder.

(9) Lady Merilee Effingham (Courtesan) playing... ? I'm not sure - I think it may be some type of a lute replica but I need to double-check this with her.

Information about the song "Greensleeves" From Wikipedia:

""Greensleeves" is a traditional English folk song and tune, a ground of the form called a romanesca.

A broadside ballad by this name was registered at the London Stationer's Company in September 1580[1] as "A New Northern Dittye of the Lady Greene Sleeves". It then appears in the surviving A Handful of Pleasant Delights (1584) as "A New Courtly Sonnet of the Lady Green Sleeves. To the new tune of Green sleeves."

The tune is found in several late 16th century and early 17th century sources, such as Ballet's MS Lute Book and Het Luitboek van Thysius, as well as various manuscripts preserved in the Cambridge University libraries.

Lyrics to "My Lady Greensleeves"
from www.owainphyfe.com

Alas, my love you do me wrong
to cast me off discourteously
for I have loved you so long
delighting in your company.

I have been ready at your hand
to grant whatever you would crave
and I have waged both life and land
your love and good will for to have.

Greensleeves was all my joy
Greensleeves was my delight
Greensleeves was my heart of gold
and who but my lady Greensleeves.

Thou couldst desire no earthly thing
but still thou hast it readily
thy music for to play and sing
and yet thou would not love me.

I would my love entreat you still
that thou my constancy may see
for I remain thy lover true
come once again and love me.
