1188. Night Visiting Song (Child 248) - (Traditional Scottish) - Sung by Mike Kearney - Video
PUBLISHED:  Apr 18, 2011
DESCRIPTION:
This song, also known as "The Grey Cock" or "The Night Visit", is another version of the song I sing, "I'm a Rover, Seldom Sober". It tells very much the same story, but without the chorus. In some versions the lover has come back as a ghost and it is uncertain whether this supernatural element was there from the start and taken out in later versions of the song, or whether it was actually borrowed from other ballads and added to this one.

Mike Kearney is a regular performer at the Victorian Folk Club in Ringwood, and is especially known for his repertoire of songs of the sea. He is also an excellent songwriter.

Lyrics and Chords:
.... E ........ A .. E ........................... B7 E
I must away now, I can no longer tarry,
.......................... A ... E .................. B7
This morning's tempest I have to cross.
..... E .......... E7 ........... A . ..... E
I must be guided without a stumble
.............. A E ..... B7 ......... E
Into the arms I love the most.

And when he came to his true-love's dwelling
He knelt down gently upon a stone
And through her window he whispered softly
“Is my true-love within at home?”

Wake up, wake up, love, it is your own true-lover.
Wake up, wake up, love, and let me in.
For I am tired, love, and, oh, so weary,
And more than near drenched to the skin.

She's raised her up with the greatest pleasure.
She's raised her up and let him in.
And they were locked in each other's arms
Until that long night was past and gone.

And when that long night was passed and over
And when the dawn clouds began to grow.
He took her hand and they kissed and parted.
He saddled and mounted and away did go.
