This song came to exemplify the Civil Rights Movement in the early 60's.

Sam Cooke wrote this song on October 8, 1963, when Cooke and his band tried to register at a "whites only" motel in Shreveport, Louisiana and were summarily arrested for disturbing the peace.

Sam died in early '64 before this song had a chance to yet be released.
