Among the great contemporary Hard-Bop trumpeters, Montrealer Kevin Dean has built a parallel, albeit less visible career as a pedagogue. "A founding faculty member of McGill University's Schulich School of Music Jazz Program, Dean has been omnipresent in Montreal's music education scene, encouraging some of the finest talent from Canada and abroad.

In this series of films, Dean is showcasing an impressively professional student ensemble.

"For a couple of years I've been organizing undergraduate student groups to play a concert series at Upstairs Jazz Bar, the established Jazz venue in Montreal. It's a way to give the more accomplished undergraduates extra professional experience and some good exposure."

Of course Dean also enjoys the experience, running through the students' original, and in his view, exceptional charts. "For this film series, we decided to feature one original piece from each student. These guys are certainly talented, and it's a special thing sharing the stage with them".

"A Moment of Introspection" was composed by the talented young bassist Mike De Masi, who is featured here as the first soloist.

As usual for a Jazz, Period. production, Dean is seen here with a horn not his own; a rare and unusual York Airflow cornet, dating to 1938. To learn more about McGill University's Schulich School of Music visit http://www.mcgill.ca/music/.
