New York saxophonist Michael Blake’s ambitious new septet project commemorates a tragic migrant incident in Vancouver's history. In 1914 a ship carrying Indian immigrants was turned away by means of exclusionist laws. Using complex arrangements and words, Blake offers a diverse musical program around tolerance, acceptance and assimilation in today's world. Moving between jazz tradition and freer, sometimes raga-inspired expression, the music is interpreted with extraordinary skill by his team of Vancouver improvisers, including JP Carter, Chris Gestrin, Dylan van der Schyff, Peggy Lee, Ron Samworth and André Lachance.
CD and digital release: Songlines Recordings, March 4, 2016.
