The word maverick can be defined as a lone dissenter, as an intellectual, an artist, or a politician, who takes an independent stand apart from his or her associates. In the most recent presidential election we heard this word thrown around just as much as we heard the word change. Mimicking the most recent stagnant state of the U.S, some critics would argue that hip-hop has also been stuck in a stagnant state of musical monotony. Out of the repetitiveness rises a true agent of change simply known as Maveric.

Born into a strong two parent home in Brooklyn, NY, Antwane McClain truly embodies the tone of his song “Sunset” when he so eloquently states, “nobody has to be perfect cause imperfections is perfectly fine/ everyone slips at times." Although Antwane grew up during the “Crack Cocaine” era of the 80’s in the notorious Sumner Housing Projects, his parents made sure he would not be confined to the boundaries of the invisible wall that seems to surround many ghettos across America. Instead they moved the family to the Crown Heights area of Brooklyn where a young Antwane would be able to develop his mind, body, and spirit in an environment that would cultivate his creativity. That ingenuity would begin to manifest itself in Maveric’s high school years as he began to hone his rhyming skills. Mimicking the sound of what many consider the “Golden Era” of hip-hop, Maveric would formulate his flow in the style of Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Biggie, Redman, Nas, and Wu-Tang Clan. By the time he got to college, he had not only developed his flow but he also began to ripen his song writing ability. With a ripe sound, an intelligent flow, and a world of confidence, Maveric began to showcase his talents amongst his peers. Once he had his inner circle cosigning for him, he began to understand that he not only needed hip-hop, but hip-hop needed him as well.

That mutual necessity has led Maveric to an abundance of Mixtape appearances, showcases, and competitions where he was proclaimed the victor amongst a host of talent. From radio airplay on the “Dego Show,” spins on “Konquer Radio,” or blessing audiences at the Reign Room, Studio 8 Lounge, and a host of other venues, Maveric’s sound has transcended the borough of Brooklyn and the typical idea of today’s hip-hop. He is the new standard by which the genre should be measured. With his debut album “The Paradigm” the world will get to know an intellect, they will feel the essence of a lone dissenter; they will be captivated by an artist; the will witness the era of a true agent of change; but most importantly the will be introduced to Maveric.
