Charlie "Bird" Parker was born August 29, 1920. He began playing the alto saxophone at age 13. Charlie Parker launched his career playing at Kansas City clubs. His collaboration with trumpeter John Birks "Dizzie" Gillespie resulted in the development of a new sound called "bebop."

Charlie Parker with Strings was reissued on CD by Verve Records in 1995. The CD is a compilation of two previous releases on the Mercury Records label. Those recordings were released, using the same title in each instance, in November of "1949" and July of "1950". The support of producer Norman Granz made these recordings possible. Granz's sponsorships allowed Charlie Parker to realize his of long-standing desire to record in a string setting.
