Dreampop sounds like something your mom was into in the ’80s. But then again, people said pink was strictly a woman’s color. People can clearly be wrong sometimes.

That’s why we don’t really pay attention to labels at Mass Appeal. And that’s how we find and love great acts like Blue Foundation in our inbox. The duo composed of Brooklyn-based producer/songwriter Tobias Wilner and the Copenhagen-based multi-instrumentalist/producer Bo Rande has a talent for coming up with nostalgic, light to the touch beats that mesh well with folk melodies. Yes, folk melodies. Their unique sound has been sampled on Lil Durk’s “Fly High” and Young Thug’s “She Notice.”

With their fifth album Blood Moon on the horizon (9/2), Blue Foundation prepped a video for their single with singer Sonya Kitchell. It follows a couple of young skaters who traverse New York City and decide to have their own adventures for the day. You can join them above.

We also asked Tobias of Blue Foundation via email about the decision to include skateboarding and any future plans to work with hip hop artists since they’ve been sampled by them already.

On skateboarding in the video:

“I have been skateboarding for more than 25 years. It has been such a big part of my life next to music. Skateboarding to me is all about getting out in the street and getting dirty. When I started out we didn’t have skateparks. It wasn’t organized at all. We skated the street just like the kids in the video. It was a great time with a lot of crazy experiences and a lot of freedom. A lot of us played in bands or produced beats. We all dreamt of making it big. There was a lot of dreams on fire.

That’s the vibe I wanted to express in the video. That’s how I still love spending my time, skating from spot to spot in the city. Skateboarding is something you can’t fake. You can see in a second how much time and pain people have been putting into it. In other words, you spend a lot of time falling. You can’t fake it and there is not much space for posers. The two kids in the video are in the beginning of their journey, but you can see the flame in their eyes. I know it sounds a bit like a cliché but it’s all about personality, style and passion.”

On working with hip hop artists:

“I grew up listening to the golden age of hip hop, KRS-one, EPMD, A Tripe Called Quest but of course also Wu-Tang, Nas, and all the Rawkus and Stone Throw stuff etc. So it would only be natural for me to work with some MCs soon. Hak from Ratking and myself were suppose to go in the studio this spring but we both ended up being too busy doing our records. I also have my eyes on DonMonique. Would fucking love to work with her! Crazy with her Thirst Trap EP.”
