'California' was the very last song written for the album and addresses the idea of chasing dreams, or chasing sunshine, at the risk of losing yourself, losing faith, and losing the ones you love in the process. The opening verse leads the listener through Topanga Canyon to the Californian coast, a drive I made almost every day while living in Los Angeles. The peaceful beauty of the canyon road became a place for ritual contemplation, and the first glimpse of the Pacific Ocean would repeatedly make me homesick.
