On December 30, 2005, after spending nearly 4 years in prison, Pimp C was released. Since his incarceration, the UGK wave had been steadily rising with rappers all through the south following Bun’s lead in the Free Pimp C movement.

Less than 3 months after his release on March 20, 2006, the very popular underground mixtape series Southern Smoke released it’s 25th installment and the first real surge of new Pimp C music since he’d come home.

“It was an honor,” DJ Smallz told SOHH.com. “I’ve worked with Bun B on a couple of projects in the past. So as soon as Pimp C came out, Bun said ‘Southern Smoke’ was definitely one of the first branches he wanted to associate Pimp C with. For us to be the first to do a mixtape with him it’s a once in a lifetime situation. Pimp C has never done a mixtape ever. This is the first, history in the making.”

When the legend in Texas who just spent 4 years in jail, comes home, drops a mixtape and the first lines of his first verse are "Sweet Jones bitch, I'm back from the dead. Fuck the judge, fuck the DA and motherfuck the feds", you know it's on.

Some of the standout tracks are an early demo-release version of T.I.'s Front to Back (4) which I always thought had Pimp rapping over the jail phone, Cory Mo's If It Ain't Me (15) with an unforgettable Pimp C hook and the first release from Pimp C, Lil' Boosie & Webbie under the V-12 Boyz group moniker with the Like That Remix (31).
