Tuneful homage to Greek culture - "Yoga" Manickam Yogeswaran in Thessaloniki - Video
PUBLISHED:  Jul 24, 2012
DESCRIPTION:
Carnatic singer "Yoga" Manickam Yogeswaran evokes the bond between two great civilizations - that originating in Greece (host of the ISME 2012 world conference of music education), and another deeply rooted in native South Asia.

Here he sings an impromptu outline of raga Kharaharapriya which is based on one of the primordial 7-note scales (melakarta raga; this one corresponding to Kafi That of Hindustani music). Countless tunes have since been derived from it to enrich the repertoire of world music. His "air zither" gestures refer to his re-introduction of the Yal (yazh) that long distinguished ancient Tamil music and therefore deserves to be rescued from oblivion.
