PUBLISHED:  Aug 06, 2010
DESCRIPTION:
Born in Eritrea, Saba moved with her family to Germany during the war in Eritrea. At an early age she felt that music was to play a major role in her life. "Music makes me feel complete and sharpens my emotions, in this often confusing world". She discovered the variety and beauty within the many different styles of music like Jazz, R&B, HipHop and traditional music. "I always loved singing in different languages and styles. It came natural to me as I grew up around diverse cultures and languages. I specially like the fusion of different music genres and elements." Her first journey in music that brought her in front a bigger audience was with an international musical group "The Gospel Tribe / Magica", an interesting mix of Afro/ Gospel / Dance. She has been touring with this crew with artists from nearly every corner of the world for a couple of years staging different shows. In 2004 while living in Frankfurt, Saba teamed up with local musicans to work on songs in her mother tongue Tigrinya and so InjeraSoul was born. Not long and a band was formed, playing in festivals and venues in Germany. A very well receaved concert in New York with local musicians followed soon. InjeraSoul was nominated for the German world music award "Creole" as best newcomer and in 2009 receaved the Shanet Award Golden Mic in Stockholm from the Eritrean festival comitee. "I call my music InjeraSoul, after the traditional Eritrean dish, its base is called Injera a soft, fluffy and slightly sour bread. They say, once tasted you cant live without it anymore, at least I cant that's for sure. But to me Injera is not simply something to eat, its soul food and gets people to sit on the same table and share out of ONE plate. And even in the Disapora we was raised on it, a constant reminder of a home far away. I hope that my music is just as nourishing to the soul. A little anecdote, as a baby while still in Eritrea I actually got burned from a flying Injera lol, don't ask me how they managed to do that. Im still carrying a scar from that day, so I guess you can say I had to earn my InjeraSoul:)" Saba is currently in London and recording her Album. "I hope that my music will help to develope and put Eritrean music and vibrant culture on the forefront of the international music scene."
