The UK release of a double sided US hit for Gene on VJ. “You Threw A Lucky Punch” reached #49, while the flipside, “Rainbow” (Written by Curtis Mayfield” landed at #47. As such, both were superb transitions from doo-wop to 60s soul/r&b by Gene Chandler.
“You Threw A Lucky Punch” was an answer song to Mary Wells’ #9 charting, “You Beat Me To The Punch”. Given this, the two discs make the greatest pair of original and answer songs in rock and roll history.
