DESCRIPTION:
Lou Harrison's Third Symphony, written for the Cabrillo Music Festival in 1982. The Symphony is in six movements, but movements 2,3 and 4 (reel, waltz and estampie) are very short, played almost without a break, and form the symphony's equivalent of a three part scherzo: fast-slow-fast.
First Movement: 00:00
Second Movement: 07:39
Third Movement 09:52
Fourth Movement 12:08
Fifth Movement 16:07
Sixth Movement 23:38
Andrew Ashenbach wrote this review of the disc in "The Gramophone":

Having already enthused about a previous outstanding MusicMasters release containing Lou Harrison's Second Symphony. I can bestow an equally warm welcome on this companion disc. Like its predecessor of seven years earlier, the Third Symphony (1982) is a work of some substance and no little potential for widespread appeal. The boldly striding outer paragraphs of the opening Allegro moderato frame a more contemplative, raptly lyrical central section (with some beautiful writing for solo strings). Next follow three linked, nicely contrasted dance episodes, the first of which, a bouncy, good-natured "Reel in Honor of Henry Cowell" (one of Harrison's teachers), is particularly infectious. The slow movement comprises a gently swaying Largo ostinato of great dignity and slumbering power, whilst the finale is a joyous, finely-sustained Allegro of deceptive rigour and satisfying proportion.

I've put together a sequence of pictures, mostly of California, where Harrison lived for much of his life, which I hope complement this excellent music.
