Charlotteville Vendors Worried About Their Livelihood - Video

DESCRIPTION:
Economist, David Walker, says vendors in Charlotteville are still concerned about the future of their businesses with the construction of a vendors’ mall.

He says some of them are not even certain they'll be able to occupy a spot in the mall to ply their trade.

The vendors' booths were demolished to allow for construction of the mall by the Tobago House of Assembly.

Speaking on Good Morning Trinidad and Tobago, Mr. Walker said the THA had no right to demolish any vendor's booth and it didn't meet the requirements to construct a mall there.

He said even after one vendor took the THA to court and won the matter, the THA still went ahead with its plan, claiming it had eventually met the requirements to have the mall constructed.

David Walker is also an activist and spoke on behalf of the vendors.

When C News contacted Secretary of Infrastructure, Quarries and the Environment, Kwesi Des Vignes, he told us he has asked his engineers for an evaluation of the Charlotteville Vendors Mall project.

He said the project has been halted for the most part with minimal works happening from time to time as they are looking at the best way forward in the interest of all stakeholders where the project is concerned.

Secretary Des Vignes added that there are a number of legal implications also preventing construction from moving forward.

He said the building is already up and they don't have any plans to demolish it but based on the results of the evaluation, they will decide on a way forward.
