I'm sure that the Parisian composer Émile Louis Fortuné Pessard (1843 - 1917) - winner of the Prix de Rome in 1866 - would wish to be remembered for his operas and church music. However, he seems to live on through one piece - ' Andalouse ', which remains popular in an arrangement (I think) for flute and piano. Composers continued to write music in strict classical style throughout the 19th century, maybe as demonstrations of compositional dexterity, but apart from a few sonatinas. virtually none of this music seems to be played today. For example, Bendel wrote some excellent pieces in the style of Haydn and Mozart, and there is a superb sonatina for two pianos by Theodore Lack. This fun piece is slightly let down by its corny ending, which neither Haydn or Mozart would have countenanced, I'm sure!
