Who is Lil B? Tha Grinda?

Bobby Robinson grew up in a rough and tumble area of Southside Houston, TX better known as “59 Southlea”, a neighborhood that Paul Wall frequently shouts out on his patented verses. Robinson eventually moved to the Hiram Clarke area of Houston where he began to dabble in two of his passions; basketball and rap music. Robinson attended Dowling Middle School where he was a star basketball player. . He continued his career at Madison High School where he played basketball on the same team as Vince Young, the record setting quarterback for the national champion Texas Longhorns. While at Madison, Robinson’s older cousin Trae began to emerge in the rap game as one of the artists in the locally famed group “Guerilla Maab”. The group also consisted of Dougie D and Zro, who has become one of the most well respected artists in Texas and the Southern region. The group received a cult following as their fast delivery and gritty flows were something that rap fans in Houston and in the South were not accustomed to. After graduating from Madison High School in 2000 Robinson decided to focus on his education and decided to attend Prairie View A&M University. Around this same time after three successful albums, much to the dismay of local fans Guerilla Maab decided to split up and go their own separate ways. Trae decided to form his own group entitled S.L.A.B. (Slow Loud and Bangin’). Trae offered an invitation to his younger cousin Robinson to join the group. Robinson who’s only previous experience was freestyling “in the hood” or in the dorm rooms at Prairie View eagerly accepted. The group also consisted of Jay-ton, who is Trae’s younger brother, and Dougie D, and Lil Boss who was added to the group later. The groups first release was an underground entitled S.L.A.B. Vol.1. The buzz around the young artists quickly spread. The first underground included such Houston heavy hitters as H.A.W.K, Paul Wall, Lil Head, Zro, and Krino. S.L.A.B. would eventually drop five undergrounds underground classics, garnering attention from major record labels all across the country. Robinson, or Lil B, which is his trademark rap name began to shine on the cd’s with his witty punchlines and distinct delivery. Many fans began to wonder, “Who is Lil B?” The group finally put out its first above ground album in 2005. The album titled “S.L.A.B. the Anthem” included Texas legend Bun B as well as Zro, Paul Wall, screwed up click members H.A.W.K. and Mike D, amongst a host of other artists. The album moved thousands of units in the ultra competitive Houston market. Trae parlayed that success into a record deal with the legendary J Prince and Rap-A-Lot Records. Lil B is now looking to branch off and start his own record label and “clique” and create a name for himself in the industry. Armed with a college degree and street smarts, Robinson is not the typical rapper trying to make a “come up” in the rap game. After learning the ins and the outs of the music business……. D3G was formed by AB, and Lil B, D3G is a record label,( D3G entertainment LLC) and extended family that includes friends and homies from the Hiram Clarke area and all over Houston and Texas. D3G came out with its first underground in August 2005 aptly named Unexpected Guest the CD quickly gathered a buzz as it personified the Houston lifestyle in a manner that people from all over the country could relate to. In 2006 the group dropped its second underground Fresh Gates which became an instant underground classic. Robinson has a underground album with Dougie D of Guerilla Maab entitle “Still Standing” which dropped in Early April 2007. Next up for Robinson is D3G’Z third underground album which is entitle Grind Volume 1 which will be release in late November 2007. Lil B is also currently working to build a buzz for his solo song "I'm Ridin SLAB" coming out on his upcoming solo album " Tha Grinda." Along with the recent success of Houston in the mainstream audience it is only a matter of time before Lil B get’s that big break that all of his colleagues in H-town have already received. Like the motto of his group D3G says, “Grind or Die”
