Rude by MAGIC! Drum Cover by Myron Carlos

This is NOT a note for note cover. It's been a LONG while since I've played anything "reggae-ish". You know how you hear something new and take a mental note of it and suddenly you notice that it keeps popping up around you and makes you wonder if it's been around for a while? That's this song. The radio station I listen to in the morning played this and I thought to myself, "That's new". Something you have to understand about living in Hawaii and especially working with teenagers: you ALWAYS hear reggae/island music. And it's ALWAYS the same ol' boring stuff. This came out of nowhere.

So after the song finished, the DJ announced the song and the band so I took a mental note of that. Later that day, one of my students mentioned that this song would be awesome to dance to at our end of the year Music Department banquet (I was compiling music to play at the dance). When I got home, I did some research. I had no Idea this song came out 5 months ago or was performed by a band from Canada. Again, you have to understand the connection Hawaii has with reggae/island music to understand my disconcertion.

The following week, EVERY STUDENT on campus seemed to know this song. Odd considering that these kids listen to what's on their ipods and NEVER listen to the radio. Couldn't help but cover it.

The general feel of what I played is similar to the original track's intended feel and groove. I did however add some double bass stuff. In fact, for the last phrase of the song, I went straight up "metal" on the basses. Again, IT'S A COVER.....and because I have two basses.....and I can......so I did.....get over it. :p

Also, I'm trying a new setup for variety's sake. Took my 3rd tom to act as a floor tom and re-centered my other two rack toms. Moved some cymbals around to feng shui the rest of the kit but I'm not completely convinced that this matches me. I may go back to my old setup very soon. My kit "looks" smaller and I don't match smaller kits.
