Poem by William Blake
William Blake was an English Dissenter, (a group of christians who split off from the Anglican Church) objecting to the state's interference in the faith. Blake began writing a collection of poems called Songs of Experience to protest the Anglican Church's policy of stifling "sinful" emotions such as anger. Poison Tree shows how Blake believed that stifling anger would only cause the anger to grow. In fact, Blake even decided to call the original draft of the piece Christian Forbearance.
The poem has been set to music several times.
